"Why Do You Write Romance" You Ask?

What a wonderful Christmas break I've had. I head back to the classroom on Monday, January 11, and decided it was time to finish my manuscript for "Loving Tiffany" - book 2 in the "Flying with Broken Wings" series. She's getting close. We'll see if I can pull it off. As I write toward the end of "Loving Tiffany", a friend reminds me of the reasons I write these stories. You see, I'm a hopeless romantic. Have been since the day I was conceived. As I grew up in a Christian home and a church that preached the love and gospel of Jesus, I learned from an early age the pattern for true romance. Why am I a romance writer? Because the gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest love story to have ever unfolded. Jesus, the groom, desperately loves his bride, the church (those whose hearts belong to him). There is not a day of my life in which I have been unaware of Jesus and his sacrificial love. From my earliest memory at the age of 3 or 4, I have known he loves me with an unimaginable, incomprehensible, unconditional love. Through the years, he has taught me the truth I share with you here. There is no love more wonderful, more unconditional, more romantic than that of Jesus. He is the foundation of my romantic notions. He is the hero in all my stories. He is what fuels every love story I write. Anyone who has read "Finding Beth" should recognize that it's not simply a story of how she meets and falls in love with an amazing guy. It's a story of redeeming love that can only ever be found in Christ. And when you read "Loving Tiffany" (once she's published), you will recognize the very same theme. My stories of romance are not simply stories of how a man and a woman come together, but they are stories of redemption and the greatest love story of all eternity. In my series, "Flying with Broken Wings", I write about broken women overcoming and being made whole through the unfettered love of Jesus. To all the Beth's and Tiffany's out there, here is song is for you. Spread the word!

...and yet as I read reviews for "Finding Beth" on Amazon today,
the tears came. I have given Beth's story to God every step of the way
and according to the reviews He is answering my prayers!
He is using "Finding Beth" to touch hearts and
encourage women in all the ways I hoped and prayed he would.
Awards are oh SO wonderful, yet it doesn't get better than that...

"Finding Beth" ~ 2013 Grace Awards Winner!

To say I am overwhelmed with amazement would be stating the case mildly. Every time I read the review written by the Grace Awards judges I catch my breath... wipe away tears... shake my head in amazement... Rather than babble on about it, I'm going to let you read it for yourself. Comments are welcome!

When  Beth Gallagher runs out of gas on a lonely highway, a door opens to her future before she's entirely closed one on the past, and the past refuses to let go peacefully. FINDING BETH is both a suspenseful and layered romance with subplots that fill out the story without overwhelming it. Even while watching the hero and heroine fall for each other, there was enough emotional tension and suspension of certainty to keep hanging on to find out how it would happen and how they would overcome their major obstacles. Characters felt real and individual, and story twists built to a powerful dark moment for the main character. The reader will appreciate the way the author handled the thematic depth of the story and what happened in that dark moment. FINDING BETH deals with abuse on all levels -- emotional, physical, and spiritual -- and the scenes and character's reactions rang true. While this is Christian fiction, the author pulled back in places that might have become too "preachy" and allowed events to unfold naturally, not offering total solutions, but the reality that the characters would continue to have to work out their faith. Some of the characters were left at the end still trying to overcome their issues, which was good. So often novels with such heavy themes give us the problems sewn up too easily. In FINDING BETH, we're shown characters heading in the right direction and characters whose lives, like our own, are works-in-progress. As to the story's main conflict, the antagonist was absolutely heinous! The author did a terrific job of describing the most intense and vicious scene with just enough description to make us feel the heroine's horror, and yet she used enough discretion to keep it readable. This is a very good romance, with well-fleshed characters and deep themes that lovers of women's fiction will also appreciate. ~~ Judges: Naomi Musch (Team Leader), Joy Ross Davis, Betty Thomason Owens

~ Grace Awards Excerpt

I must give special thanks to each and every fan who nominated "Finding Beth" for the Grace Awards. It wasn't an easy task. It took some effort. Without the nominations, I would have never made it to the Finals and, therefore, would have never won the award. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this possible. Blessings and (((hugs))) to each of you!

Thank you, Grace Awards, for bestowing such honor on writers. Thank you, Judges, for your labor of love and support of Christian Writers!

Me? Interview on Blogtalk???

I never thought in a million years I would do a radio interview, much less one that could potentially be heard all around the world. Over and over again... For up to three years... Scary! I must say, however, that I enjoyed my chat at GelatiScoop with Giovanni Gelati. It wasn't nearly as scary as I thought.

I found I'm much more comfortable with my phone in my own home than I am in a studio with a stage, a microphone, lights, camera's, and action. I'm not saying I'll never do a talk show again. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy that. I am saying that this is more in my comfort zone than even my own little camera with one of my best friends to cheer me on while recording a Vlog post. So, now I have one Blogtalk show down and at least two more to go in the coming months. Thanks to GelatiScoop, I'm ready and eager to face the rest. Bring 'em on!

For now, if you'd like to hear your author's voice, click on GelatiScoop! There is a commercial to wait through, but I think you'll find it worth the wait. I hope. I know I had fun!

"Finding Beth" Official Release Day

I can't believe this day is actually here. Maybe it will seem more real once I'm at the party and people start dropping by. As I prepare for the evening, I remember Michelle Linnette and how proud she would be of me. My Beth's birthday is today. Michelle's is tomorrow. Coincidence? I think not.

Michelle came up with the series title, "Flying With Broken Wings". You won't see that title on the books until I publish the next book. After all, you can't have a series with one book. So, in honor of and loving memory of my dear sister-friend I thought I'd re-post the poem I wrote for her the day she died...

I hear your voice
I see your smile
The sparkle in your beautiful green eyes

Your laughter bubbles
Tinkles like chimes
My heart glows and I can't help but smile

Your warm hugs
And "I love yous"
By their very essence lend strength

Your loving heart
Is beauty defined
Touching, healing, spreading sunshine

You are so special
Exquisite and precious
The treasure of you fills my mind

You are loved
Never forgotten
Now dancing on the streets of heaven

Happy Birthday, dear Michelle!

This is Andrew as Petruchio in "The Taming of the Shrew".
Andrew won "All-Star Best Actor" at the South Carolina Theater Association this past weekend.
His portrait was painted by another son, Matthew,
who is hoping to be accepted into the SC Governor's School of Arts and Humanities.

Sometimes, its all you can do to survive.
Will God rescue Beth from the path she chose?
Will he give her a second chance,
or will her past choices cost her everything?

"FINDING BETH" Countdown ~ 27 Days!

The FINDING BETH Countdown ~ 28 Days!

I've been a little absent on the social media scene the last few months. What can I say other than life has been crazy busy? There have been so many new things to learn on my journey to publication and in the midst of it I'm still a wife and mom who does her best in spite of chronic Lyme disease and the many trips to the doctor over the past six months.

So, what do I do in my spare time? Obviously, I don't record more than one "Ask the Author" videos. However, I do seek out bloggers to post for me during my launch. I write content for those posts. I edit and proofread my manuscript over and over again. I hunt for perfect places to have a launch party and book signings. I think about the most frugal way to proceed with good marketing. I post on Facebook to keep readers up to speed. I plan and write newsletters (in which I'm long overdue). Then, there's Goodreads, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. I also plan meetings for my local writer's group, and try to write newsletters and blog posts for them. And ... I know there's much, much more, but I forget. I forget a lot!

Even with a checklist, I find it difficult to remember everything. I don't know why. I mean, its not like I have a husband who needs love and support and encouragement and healthy food and general filling in the gap from his wife. It's not like I have a first year college student and need to call every department in the school to get all the answers we need. It's not like I have a senior in high school who has a sleep disorder, misses a lot of tough classes, and then has to somehow catch up to keep a passing grade, plus find time to squeeze in ACT application deadlines and testing. Did I mention college and scholarship application deadlines? It's not like I have a high school sophomore who is applying to a special art school for his Junior/Senior years and we have deadlines to meet. It's not like I have a little guy with little guy needs that are totally different from the older boys. And did I mention the shuttle service? Did I mention having one car (and thinking of a way to get another) to transport these four to school, work, karate, play practice, art studios, choir practice, doctor's appointments, etc on top of necessary shopping for the family? I won't even go into cooking and cleaning and laundry for six... Did I also say that I love these guys of mine and that they make it all worth while?

In the midst of it all, I have a book to launch and another to write, and I'm am so excited that you are a part of this! Thank you for your support and encouragement, dear reader. I pray you will be blessed by the years and hours of pouring my life into this work of heart. Join with me in spreading the word. Tell all your friends and family that "Finding Beth" will finally be here, and in time for Christmas!
